This 1905-O variety was the result of the die punch for the regular dime mintmark being mistakenly switched with one used for a quarter (which, ironically, was smaller). This was not identified by collectors until around 1912, after most examples had been already found their way into circulation. Consequently, finding any surviving examples above VG (much less problem-free in AU) requires quite a bit of hunting. There are only 8 that have been graded AU53 by PCGS, and they have graded only 15 finer examples.
The one offered here has dark toning around the rims with beautiful inset toning in orange, red and green hues that accentuates the relief and nicely frames the features of the both the bust on the obverse and the cereal wreath on the reverse. This has been one of my set favorites and I will be sorry to see it go, but it is time to pass the torch..
